Giovanna Fletcher

Friday Faves | Sharing my current favourite products every Friday!

And today I shall be sharing with your my favourite book that I have read this summer –

You’re the One That I Want by Giovanna Fletcher!

[The Blurb]

Maddy, dressed in white, stands at the back of the church. At the end of the aisle is Rob – the man she’s about to marry. Next to Rob is Ben – best man and the best friend any two people ever had.  And that’s the problem.  Because if it wasn’t Rob waiting for her at the altar, there’s a strong chance it would be Ben. Loyal and sensitive Ben has always kept his feelings to himself, but if he turned round and told Maddy she was making a mistake, would she listen? And would he be right? Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Ben and Rob thought their bond was unbreakable. But love changes everything. Maddy has a choice to make but will she choose wisely? Her heart, and the hearts of the two best men she knows, depend on it…

[What I Thought]

‘You’re The One That I Want’ was the first book of Giovanna’s that I have read (although it is actually the second book she has written – *Now on my shopping list!).  It is such an enjoyable read!  The book is written from three perspectives – Maddy’s, Ben’s and Rob’s – three best friends, who grow up together as the book progresses from childhood friends to teens to adults in their mid-twenties. The different perspectives means you get some lovely insights from the three different characters.  The book is full of emotion and all three characters are so likeable (I especially liked Maddy and Ben).  Unlike several other books in this genre which are told only from the girl’s perspective, where she thinks she has fallen in love with one guy (the ‘bad’ guy) and then eventually ends up with the right guy, who has been right under her nose the whole time  – this book focuses on the relationship between three of the closest childhood friends imaginable, and as the book progresses you follow the way their relationship grows and changes, as well as all the complications which arise when love is involved.  I must say I really got into this book – so much that I felt like shouting at Maddy through the pages to offer her my very wise (*ahem*) advice!  The book definitely kept me guessing what would happen until the very end!

I would *highly* recommend this book and look forward to Giovanna’s next book hitting the shelves!

You’re the One That I Want is available from Amazon for just £3.85 (RRP £6.99)

You can follow Giovanna’s blog here, and subscribe to her YouTube channel here (she recently uploaded her first ever vlog!)

Healthy Snack

I have been trying to eat healthily this summer by substituting food I would normally eat, such as chocolate, with more healthy options.  This is one of the snacks I have been making – it takes just five minutes (or less) to make, is healthy, filling and really tasty!

Read on to see how I make my sweet wholegrain rice and corn cakes with berries and yoghurt!

For this quick and healthy snack I used Kallo’s Blueberry and Vanilla Wholegrain Low Fat Rice and Corn Cakes (35 cals each).  These are readily available from most supermarkets.  I then added some low fat strawberry yoghurt and spread it evenly over the rice and corn cakes.  Finally I put a handful of frozen raspberries over the top of the yoghurt and that’s it – done!

I’m pretty sure that anyone reading this post has experienced stress at some point in their life, perhaps even right now, whilst reading the post!

Having recently graduated in psychology, some people think that I can somehow magically stop myself from feeling stressed.  I recently attended an interview and after I’d mentioned that I recently graduated with a degree in psychology, and went on to explain the benefits of psychology in managing stress, the panel of (FIVE!) interviewers looked at me with a smug-one-eyebrow-raised look on their faces and asked, So then, are you stressed right now?”.  I looked at them staring back at me, heart pounding fast, clammy hands shaking, waiting for an answer, when it suddenly dawned on me, and I replied with a Well yes I am, but wouldn’t it be abnormal for me to NOT feel stressed in such a situation!?”to which they all seemed surprised, yet nodded in agreement.

Cos the truth is, everyone experiences stress at some points in their life, it is completely normal and a part of human nature.  However, while we cannot completely eliminate stress from our lives (even just crossing a busy road can be a source of stress!), there are still ways in which we can reduce stress.

Here are 5 tips you can use to help you cope with stress.

1. Set goals, write them down & tick them off!

This is probably the thing which I find helps me cope with stress best, especially when I have loads of things to do and everything seems to be spinning around in my head!   I just sit down, write down a list of all the things I have to do, and ideally, the day by which I would like to have them done.  The trick here is to be specific when setting goals.  So instead of ‘Do household chores by next week’, I would write ‘Tidy desk on Monday”, “Do the laundry on Tuesday”, etc. This means that you will get to tick stuff off your to-do list more often and you will feel that you are actually working your way through all the things you need to do as the week goes by!  It is also a lot less daunting setting smaller, specific goals rather than larger, more abstract goals.

2. Set some time to do whatever you fancy – Guilt-free!

How many times do you find yourself procrastinating and wasting endless time on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc., while feeling guilty, knowing that you should very well be doing more productive!?  I know I definitely do this A LOT.  However, by the time I manage to pull myself off my laptop and get down to business I find that I’m already tired as I would’ve wasted so much time (and energy) doing something that I wasn’t even enjoying much, as I knew I should be doing other, more productive things!  A much better thing to do is to set some time, say 30 minutes, to do whatever you like, without feeling guilty, such as running a bath, going for a relaxing walk, watching TV or even scrolling through Twitter or Facebook (WHY NOT!?).  However, you must also promise yourself that once your “free time” is over, you will go back to working on the things you need to do.  This not only helps you manage your time better, but it also helps you to enjoy your relaxation time a lot more, as you would not have to worry about all the things you should be doing at that time!

  3. Plan a trip somewhere!

One of my favourite things to do in my free relaxation time is plan trips!  This does not have to be a full-blown two week holiday to the Maldives.  You could plan a trip somewhere in your home country, discover places you have not been to, or places you have not visited since you were young!  It could also be a trip to see your favourite singer or band perform live in concert.  This will help you to completely submerge yourself into something positive and productive in your free time, and will also mean that you will have something to look forward to during stressful times – WIN!

4. Get more sleep!

We have all heard that we should get around 8 hours sleep every night, however most of us don’t manage to get this much sleep, especially in times of stress.  Stress may prevent us from getting to sleep as easily as we normally would, it may mean that we wake up several times during the night feeling anxious (Whilst checking the time to count how many hours sleep we’ve got left before the alarm goes off!), or it might just be that we do not get enough time to sleep due to a lack of time becayase of all the things we have got to do!  The key here is TIME MANAGEMENT.  Setting a list of goals, accomplishing the ones you aim to accomplish before heading to bed, avoiding procrastination, and knowing that you can finally go to sleep having done what you needed to do during the day is essential for a relaxing, quality sleep.

5. Talk to others!

Talking to someone else, be it a friend or family member can be SO beneficial in times of stress.  Talking to someone who is going through the same stressful experiences means that you can talk about ways to cope with the experience, and what the other person is doing to help themselves.  However, talking can help in other ways too.  Meeting up with a friend for a coffee (or should I say, chamomile tea!?) will take your mind off the stress, and having a laugh with another person is SUCH a good form of stress relief!

I hope that atleast some of you have found this helpful!  Let me know what your top tip for coping with stress is!

I can’t believe how close it is to Christmas now – less than a week to go!

Recently I have been going a bit candle crazy.  There’s so many delicious smelling candles at this time of year and so I have stocked up!

Most of the candles I bought are Yankee candles.  My mum has always loved Yankee candles but I never really got what the fuss was about when I was younger.  Now, however, it’s a different story!  I also got a Lily-Flame candle as a gift from my dad and a Colony candle (a brand which I had not previously heard of before).

First up, here are the Yankee candles I bought!  I stuck to the Sampler size candles this year as I do get quite bored of scents if I use them for too long, so this was the perfect choice for me.

Yankee Candle Merry Marshmallow

Merry Marshmallow looks so cute and smells really sweet and lovely!  It’s described on the Yankee Candle website as “a creamy soft concoction of marshmallow and vanilla” mmm!  I am not too keen on spicy scents (as you will probably be able to tell from this blogpost) and so this was the perfect sweet scent for me.

 Yankee Candle Snowflake Cookie

Snowflake Cookie has been a popular one among the bloggers this year – and I can totally understand why!  Again, Snowflake Cookie is a rather sweet (and oh-so-pleasant) smell, described on the Yankee Candle website as “perfectly pretty holiday cookies , deliciously decorated with sugary pink icing”.  It really does smell yummy and I cannot wait to burn these!

Yankee Candle Christmas Cookie

One word – YUM!  Christmas Cookie does smell very similar to both Merry Marshmallow and (especially) Snowflake Cookie – after all, they are all sweet scents with a vanilla-ish scent.  However, this has probably got to be my favourite out of the three (if I really really had to pick just one!)  The Yankee Candle website describes Christmas Cookie as “buttery rich, vanilla scented, holiday sugar cookies”.  I can’t wait to have my room smell of these!

While I was out looking at the Yankee Candle section in the shop I came across this really cute candle holder!  I think it will look really pretty in my room, and the hearts look great with my bed sheets!

My little candle obsession seems to have been noticed by my dad too, as he surprised me with this Lily-Flame candle when he got home from a trip!

Lily-Flame Silent Night

Lily-Flame Silent Night

Lily-Flame Candle Silent Night

I have always loved Lily-Flame candles (Fairy Dust- mmmm!) so I was really excited to receive this!  Silent Night smells gorgeous, however it is such a difficult scent to describe!  I guess the best I could say is that it’s rather sweet, fruity, slightly musky, but not too overwhelming – it’s quite a relaxing scent.  The Lily-Flame website describes this as “very sweet”, however when it’s lit the website claims “the effect is quite different; the scent of the evening fields at harvest time”.  Now I don’t really know what that means, however what I do is that is smells absolutely gorgeous and not as sweet as the Yankee Candles I picked out.  I can’t wait to try this out.

Colony Mulberry Candle

I hadn’t previously heard of the Colony brand, and only discovered them whilst browsing the aisles at the supermarket as I thought they had Yankee candles in stock!  However, I gave these a sniff anyway and was very pleasantly surprised.  The candles I smelt are all very, very scented and Mulberry in particular caught my eye (or nose?).  It’s a very fruity scent – I don’t think you can get any more fruity than this!  It’s also suitably wintery and smells delicious!

I hope you enjoyed my candle haul!  What brands/scents are you loving this winter?

Let me know in the comments below!

I have been really getting into the Christmas spirit this year – quite a bit more than usual!

I absolutely love the build up to Christmas, where Christmas songs are playing in the shops, the streets are decorated and lots of people are busy doing their Christmas shopping.

I have recently discovered *this* awesome blog – CasuallyAwkward, and after reading The Christmas Tag on there, I thought I would give it a go myself!

1. What is your favourite Christmas song?

There are some Christmas songs which I absolutely love and could listen to all year round (and other which I really cannot stand and don’t enjoy listening to at any time of the year!).  My favourite Christmas songs are ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ and ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’.

2. What is your favourite festive drink?

Although I don’t enjoy the typical festive drinks, such as Mulled Wine (eurgh), I do love hot wintery drinks, such as Salted Caramel Lattes and White Hot Chocolate – in other words I love visiting places like Costa and Starbucks at this time of year!

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas film?

I have some absolute favourite Christmas films which I love watching at any time of year.  One of them being ‘Love Actually’ (Colin Firth & Hugh Grant in ONE FILM? Yes please!).  I also remember loving ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ when I was younger!  Reading Christmassy books at this time of year is another thing I really enjoy.

4. What is at the top of your Christmas Wish List this year?

I have always found this question so difficult to answer, as although I can think of a million things I would love during the year, I can almost never think of anything I would like at Christmas!  However, new makeup will always be appreciated!  I also love little gifts that really mean something special from the person giving them to you, such as a present which reminds me of an inside joke we have, etc. (if that makes any sense?)

5. What is your favourite festive makeup or nail art look?

GOLD!  I love wearing gold eyeshadow during this time of year!  As for my nails, I love gold, dark red, navy blue and lots of sparkles at Christmas!

6. What is your favourite outfit at Christmas time? (LBD? Christmas jumper? Pjs?)

I love hanging around in my onesie on Christmas day!  Although I have always wanted a Christmas jumper, I never end up buying one just because I think I would much rather spend my money on a jumper I could wear more often – being a student ain’t easy (I do regret doing this though!)

7. Would you rather play out in the snow or enjoy it inside with the fire and a cuppa?

Definitely a bit of both!  Going out in the snow, then going back inside with the fire and a cuppa is just lovely.

8. Wrapping presents – love or loathe?

I *LOVE* everything about wrapping presents!  From choosing which wrapping paper to use for which presents, to sticking on the last bit of tape and a name tag, then placing the presents under the Christmas tree – love love love!

9. What is your favourite Christmassy food?

I’m not a fan of cinnamon, ginger and that sort of Christmassy food.  However, I do love a roast turkey dinner – yummy!

10. What is your favourite thing about Christmas?

My favourite thing has got to be the build up to Christmas.  I like the fact that family and friends think about each other whilst buying their gifts, and also get to spend more time together.  Christmas parties are fun and a great excuse to dress up in sparkly (ish) outfits!  I also love the decorations and Christmas songs playing on the radio and in shops.  Finally, I really enjoy Christmas day – spending time together with the people you love and enjoying (or atleast trying to enjoy- hehe!) each other’s company.

I hope you enjoyed reading The Christmas Tag and would like to tag anyone reading this to have a go at it!  Please leave your links down below if you are planning on giving it a go on your blog.

This month has brought along with it lots of changes, starting uni and a lovely little holiday!

These are the items I have been using and loving most during the past month.

Happy Jackson

 1. Happy Jackson Futile Attempt At Organising My Life A6 Notebook

I recently posted a mini-stationary haul, where I featured this notebook (you can see what it looks like better here).  I absolutely love Happy Jackson’s range of products – they have got so many quirky/funny products, and are not just limited to stationary!  They’ve also got some great gifts and homeware – I want it all!  Happy Jackson is available at John Lewis or online at Temptation Gifts.  I have found my notebook essential this month as I’ve tried to get super-organised for uni!

Soap and Glory

2. Soap & Glory Clean On Me / Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter [Both Travel Size]

I have been doing lots of traveling during the past month and although I didn’t want to leave my Soap & Glory Clean On Me shower gel at home, I didn’t fancy carrying around 500ml of product everywhere I went – and so I decided to purchase the mini 75ml version (£2.50 from Boots, also on 3-for-2).  I’ve been amazed at just how long this product will last me – I thought I wouldn’t have any left after a week on holiday but I’ve still got loads left – hooray!  I’ve also been loving The Righteous Butter, which I had not previously tried out – it smells just like Clean On Me (i.e. AMAZING) and leaves my skin feeling really soft!  This is also available for £2.50 from Boots.

Real Techniques

3. Real Techniques Powder Brush

I have been absolutely loving Real Techniques’ Powder Brush this month!  I previously only owned the Expert Face Brush, which I found great for applying and blending in my foundation. The Powder Brush is really big, fluffy and soft – perfect for applying powder!   I have also been using this to dust some bronzing powder over my face.  I don’t think that Real Techniques will ever let me down.  The brush is quite affordable at £12.99 from Boots.

Maybelline Color Tattoo

4. Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR ‘On and On Bronze’

I have loved this gel-cream eyeshadow ever since it made its way into my life last summer (I even did a review about it here).  However, I have been loving it and appreciating it even more during the past month as I haven’t always had time to apply/blend powder eyeshadow in the mornings.  With this I could just apply some to my eyelids using my little finger, apply some liquid liner over the top, mascara and that’s my eyes done!  The eyeshadow lasts all day and I find that ‘On and On Bronze’ is a really versatile colour, which looks lovely both during the day and at night!  This costs £4.99 from Boots, and they’ve got some other lovely colours in the range too!

Sleek Brow Kit

 5. Sleek Brow Kit in ‘Light’

Finally, this is a product I have purchased only at the beginning of the month!  I have reviewed it here.  Like all the other Sleek products I own, this has not let me down!  The brow kit includes a pigmented wax, powder, two small brushes and a pair of tweezers.  It’s easy to use and helps me achieve a defined, yet still natural looking brow and I could not recommend this enough to anyone looking for an affordable brow kit!  It is available from Superdrug at £8.49.

Have you tried any of the products I’ve been loving on this month?  What products have you been loving?

Happy Jackson

Earlier this month I started studying for my postgraduate degree.

And this meant one thing – GETTING ORGANISED!

My bedroom was a rather big mess after completing my undergraduate degree earlier this year, so I thought that it was about time for me to throw out all my old notes, sell my used books and generally get everything back in order before I start studying again.

While doing all of this I realised that there is one very essential thing that I will need to keep myself organised during the new academic year, and that is… A NOTEBOOK!

I did, somehow, end up with two though.

1. Happy Jackson Futile Attempt At Organising My Life A6 Notebook

I thought this notebook was perfect.  First of all, the writing on the front pretty much sums up my life.  Secondly, I thought it looked so cute with a gorgeous blue cover and pink page edges.  It is also a perfect handbag-sized notebook.

Happy Jackson

The notebook has also got a small pocket on the inside back cover, perfect for important notes that you wish to keep with you at all times.

Happy Jackson

2. Happy Jackson Serious Notebook A5 Notebook

Happy Jackson

This notebook also caught my eye whilst browsing the Happy Jackson collection.  It is A5, with an elastic/rubber band around to keep it securely shut.

Just like the previous notebook, it has also got coloured paper edges – this time in blue!

Happy Jackson

I absolutely love the Happy Jackson stationery collection (as well as all their other products!).  They have such a great sense of humour, which you don’t really find on any other products.

Happy Jackson is available from Temptation Gifts

Jane Costello

So far I’ve only posted beauty-related blog posts on here, however I’ve decided that I shall also start including some book reviews!  I’ll start off by admitting that I am a very slow reader.  However, there’s nothing that I enjoy more than curling up in bed, scented candle lit, with my nose stuck into a good old chick lit book!

Today I’ll be reviewing ‘All The Single Ladies’ by Jane Costello, who is one of my favourite authors!

[The Blurb]

Samantha Brooks’ boyfriend has made a mistake. One his friends, family, and Sam herself know he’ll live to regret. Jamie has announced he’s leaving, out of the blue. Jamie is loving, intelligent and, while he isn’t perfect, he’s perfect for her – in every way except one: he’s a free spirit. And after six years in one place, doing a job he despises, he is compelled to do something that will tear apart his relationship with Sam: book a one-way flight to South America. But Sam isn’t giving up without a fight. With Jamie still totally in love with her, and torn about whether to stay or go, she has three months to persuade him to do the right thing. So with the help of her friends Ellie and Jen, she hatches a plan to make him realise what he’s giving up. A plan that involves dirty tricks, plotting, and a single aim: to win him back. But by the time the tortured Jamie finally wakes up to what he’s lost, a gorgeous new pretender has entered Sam’s life. Which begs the question …does she still want him back?

[What I Thought]

After having read ‘Girl on The Run’ and ‘My Single Friend’ by Jane Costello, I  could not wait to read this book, and I was definitely not disappointed.  As with all Jane Costello books, ‘All The Single Ladies’ promised to bring lots of laughter (yes, this book actually made me laugh out loud – not something that books normally tend to do!).

The main character, Samantha Brooks (aka Sam) was in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend Jamie.  However, Jame then decided to book a one-way ticket to South America and break up with her.  Sam had three months to convince Jamie that he was making a mistake, and that he actually belongs with her.  She tries very hard to play it cool and pretends that she’s doing great without him – even going on dates just to try and make him jealous!

It’s very easy to get involved with all the characters in the book, especially Sam, as she is so likeable & I could relate to her at times!  The book is also very current as there’s some online dating & quite a bit of Facebook involved in the story (and BOY, could I relate to this!), which made me love it even more!

The chapters are all rather short, making it very tempting to read just ‘one more’ chapter before going back to the real world and doing real world stuff.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light, fun read filled with lots of laughter!
