Although I love going abroad and visiting new countries, there’s one bit I always kind of dread – flying.  I’m a lot better at flying than I used to be although I still sometimes get quite anxious about it. You can read more about this here.

As I’ve been travelling a lot more frequently throughout the last few years, I have found distracting myself while on a flight is the best way for me to feel calmer and actually, maybe even enjoy the flight.  Here are 5 things I like to do on a plane:

1. Have a YouTube Marathon

I turn to YouTube for pretty much anything these days – whether I just want to relax, learn how to bake something, or simply want to have a laugh.  So far, I’ve never been on a flight which offered WiFi so I normally go through my YouTube subscriptions list and save a few videos on my iPad Mini to watch throughout the flight.  Not only does it help the flight pass quicker, but it’s also the perfect time to watch tons of videos and get swept into the YouTube hole without feeling guilty about it!

2. Read

Reading is one of my favourite ways to relax, however I normally find it so hard to make the time to read.  That is why whenever I’m on a plane, I always pack a book or magazine which I can get lost in while flying.  Admittedly, I normally find it hard to concentrate on reading a book while flying so I tend to go for a magazine such as Glamour, which has a good mix of beauty, fashion and lifestyle articles.

3. Colour!

The adult colouring book craze from last year seems to be fading, however I still find colouring so therapeutic!  It’s such a great way of concentrating on nothing more but patterns and colours, and taking your mind off anything that might be worrying you.  I particularly love The Mindfulness Colouring Book by Emma Farrarons.  Not only is it a handy size for popping into your travel bag, but it’s also got a great mix of fun, intricate designs to play around with.

4. Appreciate Flying

Although the thought of flying can sometimes make people feel quite anxious, it’s nice to actually appreciate it once you’re on a plane.  Flying is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience, and when you think about it, gliding past the clouds and getting an aerial view of wherever you are visiting is a pretty special memory to cherish.  This is one of the reasons why I love booking a window seat when flying – looking outside whilst listening to some music can be just so relaxing.

5. And when all else fails…

Sleep!  Sleeping might not always be easy whilst flying, especially with all the noise and the not-so-luxurious seating. However, grab yourself a cosy travel pillow and a blanket scarf, plug your earphones in and close your eyes… even if you don’t drift away, you’ll be nice and cosy!
