The release of the Maybelline Color Drama Velvet Lip Pencils back in 2014 caused a lot of hype on the internet due to them being labelled as dupes for the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. However, in spite of this and the fact that everyone seemed to absolutely love the product, it’s somehow taken me until just earlier this year to actually try it out for myself!
..And it’s already made it’s way into my February Favourites!
When it comes to lip products, I normally tend to stick to lipsticks or liquid lipsticks as, until recently, I had the (false) impression that lip pencils are hard and drying on the lips. And whilst some lip pencils might be, the Maybelline Color Drama Velvet Lip Pencil is the complete opposite!
I picked up the shade ‘Keep It Classy’ – a deep red-toned plum shade that is similar to MAC Plumful. Although I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of pigmentation and creaminess when I first applied the lip pencil, I was truly impressed and have nothing but praise for this product! Not only is the product extremely pigmented, but it also feels very creamy, even moisturising on the lips – and this was definitely not something I was expecting from a lip pencil! It even hid any dry patches I had on my lips.
The lip pencil is very easy to apply and has a pleasant berry scent to it, which I absolutely love. I found the finish to be not too glossy or matte – it’s the perfect in-between with a subtle bit of a natural sheen to it. In terms of longevity, the lip pencil did pretty well and I can go quite a few hours before I need to re-apply (unless I eat/drink!).
I will definitely be picking up more shades from the collection to try out as the shade range looks absolutely amazing – and if the ‘Keep It Classy’ shade is anything to go by, the formula is pretty great too!
