When I first started blogging back in 2013, I was pretty much clueless on the importance of Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO).  However, two and a half years on, SEO is an integral part of my blogging routine and as a result, an increasing proportion of visitors come to my site through their searches on Google.  So, if you’re just starting out with blogging or you’d like to gain a better understanding of SEO and how this can help your blog, keep reading to discover my top SEO tips for bloggers, below.

Search Engine Optimisation is essentially concerned with optimising your blog in order for it to appear as high up as possible on a list of search engine results.  For example, if someone were to search for ‘Topshop The Face Collection‘, optimising your blog post will help your post to rank high up on Google and therefore, it will more likely result in someone visiting your blog.  This is a great way of helping more people find your blog, and is therefore an important part of growing your blog.

So, here are 5 basic SEO tips to help you optimise your blog:

1. Use Appropriate Keywords

One of the most important things when it comes to optimising your blog, is to use appropriate keywords.  Keywords are the terms that people may use when searching for something on a search engine.  For example, someone might search ‘Lush Frozen Bath Bomb Review‘ if they’re looking for a review of the Lush Frozen bath bomb – so ‘Lush Frozen Bath Bomb Review’ would be the keywords for that particular post and should be included within the text in that post.

2. Choose Your Blog Post Titles Wisely

Whenever it comes to titling your post, it’s important to consider what your main keywords for that post are – and if possible, include them in your title.  This could be the name of the product which you are reviewing, or anything which you think people might type into a search engine when they want to end up on that particular post.  For example, ‘Soap and Glory Hand Food‘ is a much better title than ‘My favourite hand cream’.

3. Add a Search Description + Permalink
If you use Blogger, you may not have noticed the little ‘Search Description’ section on the right hand side, whenever you write up a new post.  This can be found in the column underneath ‘Labels’, ‘Schedule’, ‘Permalink’ and ‘Location’.  Adding text to this area will let Google know what sentence you would like to show up when someone comes across your blog post on a search result.  This should be around 156 characters long and include your main keywords.  You could also complement this by adding a custom Permalink by clicking on Permalink, selecting Custom Permalink, and adding your keywords in the following format: soap-and-glory-hand-food for optimum search engine results.

4. Optimise Your Images
In addition to optimising your text, it is also a good idea to optimise your images.  This is such a quick and easy thing to do, and it’s important so that your images will show up on image search results.  In order to optimise your images, simply click on the image you have added to your post, select Properties, and add your keywords to the ALT Text section – simple!

5. Good Quality Content

Although you might have included important keywords in your post and title, added a search description, optimised your permalink and added your ALT tags, never underestimate the power of great content!  Not only is this essential if you want to attract an increasing number of visitors/readers to your blog, but it also helps you to obtain a higher ranking on Google – it’s a win-win situation for both you and your readers!
