Lately I’ve started to take working out slightly more seriously. Not only does it help me to feel better about myself, but it also helps me feel happier and calmer. However, although working out is great for your mind and body, it might not always be great for your skin. Sweating while you work out can result in clogged pores and consequently, an unclear complexion.
So, here are my top 5 tips for taking care of your skin when working out.
1. Avoid wearing makeup
I’ve definitely been guilty of this one! No matter how good you might want to look while exercising, wearing makeup while working out causes a buildup of excess oil due to the combination of makeup and sweat. As you sweat, your pores naturally open up to allow the skin to breathe, so applying your foundation before a workout may not be the best idea as it can clog your pores and result in acne. And let’s face it – your makeup won’t stay in place for long anyway!
2. Cleanse your face before and after exercising
It’s important to cleanse your face right before and after exercising. This helps to get rid of the build up of oil, sweat, dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria in your pores. Doing this will not only help keep your complexion clear but will also help you feel instantly more refreshed! Afterwards, apply some moisturiser to rehydrate your skin.
3. Resist the urge to touch your face
When things get particularly hot and sweaty, you’re more likely to be tempted to wipe the sweat off your face using your hands. However, this can cause more bacteria to build up, especially after you have been using gym equipment. Use disinfectant wipes on gym equipment before and after you use it to help protect you from breakouts as well as colds and other viruses!
4. Apply SPF, especially if you’re exercising outside
We all know how important it is to apply SPF – and this is no different when working out, especially if you plan on doing so outside, or in your garden. There are so many great facial SPFs available which are light on the skin and don’t leave your skin feeling sticky. My current go-to facial SPF is the Nivea Sun Protect and Bronze Face Cream SPF 50 – it feels light on the skin, is easily absorbed, water resistant, and best of all, it only costs £6.50!
5. Keep hydrated
Everyone knows that keeping hydrated while exercising is very important – and this also shows up on your skin. By drinking plenty of water, not only will you feel better and more energised while exercising, but it will also help you to achieve that satisfying post-workout GLOW!
