AUTOGRAPH COLLECTING | THE BASICS

Today’s post is going to be a bit different to my usual beauty/fashion posts.  I’m going to be writing about one of my hobbies which I haven’t as yet spoke about over here – autograph collecting! I will be starting out by sharing some basic tips for obtaining autographs from your favourite celebrities, which you will hopefully find useful or interesting!

I started collecting autographs back when I was still at school, around 12 years ago.  I loved the idea of writing handwritten letters and sending them out (by actual real life non-email mail!) to my favourite singers, actors, TV personalities, etc.  In addition to this, nothing could beat the feeling of coming back home to a special letter addressed to you, from someone you’ve admired on-screen for so long!  Some of my favourites include signed photos from Katy Perry, Olly Murs, Kylie, Daniel Radcliffe, One Direction and Amanda Seyfried!

So, here are my top tips for collecting autographs from your favourite celebrities!

  • Get writing.  I have found that the easiest way to obtain autographs from celebrities is to write to them.  And by write, I don’t mean sending them an email, but actually write, using a pen and paper!  Several celebrities return signed photos in the mail, via their management’s address – in fact, this is how I collected the majority of my autographs.  Websites such as fanmail.biz contain a huge database of celebrities together with their managements’ address, which I have found really useful.
  • Be polite.  It is important that you only write to celebrities whose work you actually enjoy – there is no point in writing to celebrities you aren’t really bothered about as it ends up being a waste of time for both you and them. Writing to celebrities you admire also makes the letter writing process a whole lot easier, as you can mention their work which you have enjoyed the most, and what it has meant to you. It is best to keep letters short and sweet – no longer than one or two pages.  I also prefer to handwrite the letters I send as I feel this makes it more personal – however some may argue that it is quicker to type and easier to read typed letters! You could ask for a signed letter at the end of the photo, but remember to always be polite. 🙂
  • Make it easier for themOf course, not all celebrities will reply to letters sent to their management, simply because of the large volume of mail they receive each day.  However, there are certain things you can do to increase your chance of getting a reply.  My top tip here would be to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter, as well as a photo for them to sign.  Although some celebrities prefer to send out their own signed photos, not all of them do this – and I have found that I am much more likely to receive a reply when I include a photo and stamped envelope with my letter.  Also, remember that you are not guaranteed to receive your item back, so choose wisely when you are sending something to be signed!
  • Be patient. One thing I have learnt since I started collecting autographs is to be patient.  On average, it will take around 3-6 months to get a reply, sometimes less and sometimes more (I received a reply back from Katy Perry 2 years later – but that’s an extreme case!), and you’ve also got to be prepared that you won’t always receive a reply.  However in my opinion, it’s always worth a try!  First of all, writing and sending handwritten letters is fun and such a nice change from typing out emails, and also, when you do receive a reply from one of your favourite celebrities, the effort and the wait is definitely worth it, as it feels so rewarding that you get to cherish an item that was specially signed for you from someone that you have always admired!  So give it a go! 🙂

I hope you found these tips useful and that it has inspired some of you to get writing.  If you have any other questions, please leave them in the comments below or you could ask me on Twitter @beautyandbird!
